University of Victoria Research Study Seeking Participants Who Have Left High-Demand Groups or Cults

At After The Truth, we are always looking for ways to support people navigating life after high-control religious groups, cults, and coercive communities. We are honoured to share a new research opportunity from the University of Victoria that aims to better understand the mental health needs of individuals who have exited these environments.

About the Study

The research project, titled “Investigating the Mental Health Needs of People Exiting High Demand Groups,” is led by Dr. Smart at the University of Victoria, alongside a team of graduate and undergraduate researchers.

This trauma-informed study focuses on the lived experiences of people who have left:

  • Religious cults or high-control groups
  • Political or ideological movements
  • Online or hybrid online/in-person high-demand groups
  • Influencer-led or coercive online communities

The goal is to better understand the challenges people face after leaving, including:

  • Mental health impacts
  • Identity changes
  • Coping and recovery
  • Access to support services

Researchers hope the findings will help improve mental health care and resources for survivors of high-demand groups.

Who Can Participate?

You may be eligible if you:

  • Are 19 years or older
  • Identify as having been part of a cult or high-demand group
  • Left the group within the past 1–5 years
  • Speak English and have computer access
  • Are not currently in active crisis
  • Can identify a support person (friend, therapist, family member, etc.)

What Participation Involves

Participants will:

  • Participate in a 45-minute online questionnaire
  • Optionally take part in a 60–90 minute Zoom interview

Participants are compensated for their time:

  • Approximately $20–$50, depending on participation level

The study follows a trauma-informed approach, offering breaks, support resources, and sensitivity to participant well-being throughout the process.
